Lara Oyesanya is vice-president and legal counsel at Barclays. Lara obtained her law degree from the University of Lagos and was called to the Nigerian bar in 1982. She practiced at the chancery and commercial bar before being admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales in 1993. She was a former head of legal at Lex, part of the then HBOS plc and her in-house practice has been in FTSE 100 firms including BAE Systems and RAC plc, in industry (British Rail) as well as in private practice (McKinnells and Hammonds). Lara states that the most enjoyable part of her current role is using her “legal skills, knowledge and experience to provide pragmatic solutions to the challenges we face in Business Banking”. Lara is actively involved with initiatives that promote diversity and social mobility and when asked who is responsible for driving change in the legal profession commented that it was down to “All of us!” She is also an editor for Lexis Nexis Encyclopaedia of Banking Law and consulting editorial board member for Lexis PSL Financial Services.
