Nirmal Shant QC is a Circuit Judge appointed in March 2015 and sits at Derby Crown Court. She was previously a Recorder appointed in 2001. With some thirty years’ experience, Nirmal had a substantial and nationwide practice involving heavyweight crime including homicide, serious gangland violence, firearms, trafficking and serious fraud.

Nirmal graduated from the University of Leicester, was called to the Bar (Gray's Inn) in 1984 and took silk in 2006 when she became the first woman Queen's Counsel within her then Chambers. She is a former member of the Bar Human Rights Committee and a current member of the Association of Women Judges. In addition Nirmal is the Chair of the Midland Society of Asian Lawyers, a Midland and Oxford Circuit Diversity Officer and Bencher at Gray's Inn. She is also a member of the Criminal Justice Strategy Committee and De Montfort University Law Advisory Committee. Nirmal is fluent in Punjabi and Hindi.
