Rukia Baruti, a non-practising solicitor qualified in England and Wales, is founder and Managing Director of Africa International Legal Awareness (AILA), a non-profit organisation working to build capacity in African and other developing countries on international economic law, with a core focus on investment treaty law and investment arbitration.  Prior to founding AILA, Rukia practised law at SJ Berwin’s International Arbitration Group in London where she was involved in the arbitration and litigation of commercial disputes, a majority of which were international in nature.  She regularly sits as arbitrator both as sole arbitrator and as a member of a panel of three in arbitrations conducted under various arbitration rules. She also holds the position of Vice-President of the LCIA Africa Users’ Council and has been an LCIA counsel during a term of secondment. Rukia was listed in The Lawyer magazine's ‘Hot 100’ of 2009, in recognition of her pro-bono work then with International Lawyers for Africa. Rukia holds a first class LLB (Hons) degree from the University of London, an MA in Diplomatic Studies and a Graduate Diploma in International Studies focusing on public international law and international relations.
